Surprise: there’s a new novel from Sally Rooney coming this fall.
Attention Sally Rooney fans: today, FSG announced that they will be publishing Rooney’s next novel, Beautiful World, Where Are You, on September 7, 2021. (The novel was reportedly sold in a two book deal, which means we have another one forthcoming—but let’s not get ahead of ourselves just yet.)
Here’s the publisher’s description:
Alice, a novelist, meets Felix, who works in a warehouse, and asks him if he’d like to travel to Rome with her. In Dublin, her best friend, Eileen, is getting over a break-up and slips back into flirting with Simon, a man she has known since childhood. Alice, Felix, Eileen, and Simon are still young—but life is catching up with them. They desire each other, they delude each other, they get together, they break apart. They have sex, they worry about sex, they worry about their friendships and the world they live in. Are they standing in the last lighted room before the darkness, bearing witness to something? Will they find a way to believe in a beautiful world?
“Beautiful World, Where Are You is extraordinary for its compassion, humor, and lyrical delight. It’s extraordinary for the vitality of its characters and for the way it pushes so many contemporary buttons with deadeye accuracy and feeling,” said FSG publisher Mitzi Angel in a press release. “Sally Rooney asks questions about things we hold dear: money, love, beauty, truth, success, God, the internet, art, and goodness itself. She shows us how precarious things are and how precious life is. I’m enormously grateful to be working with her again.”
Sounds . . . very Rooneyesque. In the meantime, perhaps you would like to read a profile of Rooney, or her first short story about Marianne and Connell, or our plea to stop pigeonholing her as a Millennial Writer, or revisit the TV adaptation of Normal People?
