You, too, can own one of Larry McMurtry’s beloved typewriters!

The estate of the great Larry McMurtry—who left this dusty, low-slung vale of tears in 2021—will be auctioning off some of the author’s possessions, including 14 of the Hermes 3000 portable typewriters that McMurtry personally thanked in his 2006 Golden Globe acceptance speech for Best Screenplay (for Brokeback Mountain).

You can also buy signed copies of several of McMurtry’s classics (Terms of Endearment, Cadillac Jack, Streets of Laredo and, of course, Lonesome Dove, which is also signed by Robert Duvall and Anjelica Huston), along with books from his expansive personal collection. Not surprisingly, though, it gets a little weirder, and you’ll also be able to bid on personal items like:

…several animal skulls (Vogt speculated that one might come from a rhinoceros), native American bowls, a 1901 Colt 45 pistol, a vintage table clock and perpetual flip calendar, even a small bottle of Dr. Pepper.

That’s right, you can own a small bottle of Dr. Pepper that once belonged to America’s greatest writer of cowboy malaise.

The auction is scheduled for 1 p.m. May 29 at Vogt Auction Galleries, 7233 Blanco Road, and will be simulcast at Texasauction.com. To register to bid online or by phone, call 210-822-6155 in advance.
