If you’ve been watching the trials of the Wicked press tour with bated breath—or if you’ve been clenching your wand for nine straight months, just waiting for the release of a certain cash-grabby sequel—boy, have I got a hump day treat for you.

The original screen adaptation of The Wizard of Oz.

This 1910 silent short, based on the first popular stage musical(!), stars Bebe Daniels as Dorothy Gale. In Otis Turner’s Oz, farm animals are played, winningly, by adults in school play couture. Choreography is muddled, but enthusiastic. And as a piece of puppetry, the lion really takes the cake.

Mileage may vary per your metric, but Frank L. Baum’s universe has received the big screen treatment at least 25 times—and that’s not even counting the reels lost in fires. Real Oz-heads will have favorites. That’s only natural. But I can think of no better way to prepare for For Good than this charming media history lesson.

To quote the video’s first totally normal comment: “100 years ago and this shiz* still has better quality than hotel security cameras.” I invite you to judge for yourself.

Before you skip off to admire Cynthia’s nail length and hear Ariana go for that E6, go back to the wellspring. It’s a wonderful world.
