In romance novels, I just love the friends to lovers trope—the tension! The magic of their friendship! In the new movie People We Meet on Vacation , based on the Emily Henry novel of the same name, actors Emily Bader and Tom Blyth have great chemistry and perfected their significant looks.

If watching the movie inspired you to pick up a romance novel, or you’re just craving more friends to lovers stories, I have some great recommendations:

a lot like adios

Alexis Daria, A Lot Like Adios
(Avon)

Michelle and Gabe grew up next door to each other and were fan-fiction writing best friends, that is, until Gabe suddenly left New York City for college without a word to Michelle. Now, after a decade apart, they are about to embark on a project together that brings Gabe back home. While reconciling their friendship and where it went wrong, Michelle invites him to stay at her place and they discover a long-dormant lust for each other. Because they’re childhood friends in this, the sexual tension in this novel is palpable and you will eat it up!

roommate risk

Talia Hibbert, The Roommate Risk
(Nixon House)

This very short novel is about two best friends, Jasmine and Rahul, who have just become roommates. Jasmine is a cynic on romance and love; Rahul has always been in love with her. Even though he knows that it’s a mistake, he lets her move in because Rahul can never say no to Jasmine. He’s about to risk everything just for some late night kisses with his best friend. Rahul is definitely the main draw in this title.

cross the line

Simone Soltani, Cross The Line
(Berkley)

Willow has been in love with her brother’s best friend, Dev, for as long as she can remember. Dev is a Formula 1 driver and is in desperate need of a PR manager, so Willow deftly steps in. After a kiss they must figure out a way to work together professionally despite their obvious chemistry – all without Willow’s older brother finding out. There is really good Formula 1 representation in this book and it reads super technical and enjoyable for someone like me that has only watched the Drive to Survive docuseries.

hook line and sinker

Tessa Bailey, Hook, Line and Sinker
(Avon)

Hannah is hopelessly in love with a colleague and when she suggests filming a movie in her best friend’s hometown, Fox invites her to crash in his spare bedroom. As a famous flirt, he gives Hannah some advice on how to win her crush over, but she finds herself trying to win over Fox instead. Their texting relationship felt realistic and I enjoyed their friendship a lot.

Julia Quinn, Romancing Mister Bridgerton
(Avon)

Penelope has been in love with her best friend’s brother, Colin, forever. It has been over a decade since she was a debutante in London society and she has developed a perfectly platonic relationship with Colin. Penelope thinks she knows everything about him until she discovers something new and, in turn, a major secret of Penelope’s is revealed by Colin. Penelope is such a wonderful character and you will fall in love with her!  Netflix’s Bridgerton (Season 3) is based on this novel but is quite different – definitely read the book!

heartstopper

Alice Oseman, Heartstopper
(graphix/Scholastic)

Charlie, a shy, openly gay teenage boy, meets Nick, a popular rugby player. They strike up a new, wonderful friendship. This is a coming of age graphic novel series about friendship, loyalty, mental health, and love. It’s super sweet and reads super quickly.

this spells love

Kate Robb, This Spells Love
(Dial Press)

Gemma has just gotten dumped by her long-time boyfriend, so she gets drunk with her aunt, sister, and best friend, Dax. They all drunkenly decide to perform a spell that promises to erase Gemma’s ex-boyfriend from her memory complete with a platonic kiss from Dax. When she wakes up hungover the next morning, she discovers an alternate reality where her friendship with Dax is completely non-existent. Gemma has to learn to be friends with him all over again and falls in love with her best friend in the process.

one day in december

Josie Silver, One Day in December
(Ballantine)

One night, while riding the bus, Laurie falls in love at first sight with a handsome stranger. She has spent a year searching every nook and cranny for him until her best friend, Sarah, introduces her new boyfriend to Laurie. It’s the man from the bus station, Jack! From there on, it is ten years of friendship, devastating heartbreak, and so many what ifs. This book will have you sobbing. This book has the vibes of Love, Rosie and One Day.

Eloisa James, The Ugly Duchess
(Avon)

Theodora and James are best friends. Theo is unfairly nicknamed as the ugly duchess by London society. James discovers that all of his family’s money is about to disappear and is forced to marry Theo for her dowry. After Theo discovers James’ true intentions, they separate and James becomes a pirate. Theo and James finally reunite after many years and James must convince Theo that he did love her from the very beginning. The plot in this historical romance novel will have you guessing the whole time!
