WATCH: Reyna Grande in Conversation with John Freeman
The Distance Between Us, as Featured on Alta's California Book Club
Click below to watch the virtual meeting of the Alta California Book Club, which Books Editor of Alta Journal David Ulin describes as:
an opportunity for us to rethink the book club as a kind of ongoing process involving events, involving posts and interviews and discussions on the Alta website, and to really think about digging deep into a book a month and in the process thinking about what California literature is and what California literature means.
The guests of this meeting include Reyna Grande, author of the celebrated memoir The Distance Between Us, which chronicles her journey from Mexico in 1985 at age nine; poet and editor John Freeman; and Professor Marissa Lopez, who studies Chicanx literature from the 19th century to the present.
Freeman describes The Distance Between Us, a finalist for a National Book Critics Circle Award, as “a classic memoir of coming to America, and its costs, and to some degree the upsides of it.”
