Thanks to a group of booksellers, Amazon is pulling out of the Paris Book Fair.
Amazon has pulled out of sponsoring the Paris Book Fair, thanks to pressure from a booksellers’ association: Syndicat de la Librairie Française (SLF).
The SLF, which represents independent bookstores all over France, announced plans to boycott the fest based on Amazon’s announced participation earlier this year. Citing the evil empire’s many negative effects on the publishing industry, the association also chided Book Fair leadership for facilitating an “irresponsible” collaboration.
SLF leaders specifically accused the mega-corp of aiming “to flood the market with fake AI-generated books” at a moment when human authors are fighting to protect their work from annexation by machines.
After weeks of pressure, Amazon stepped away from the Fair. Though the sponsor did not go willingly. A spokesperson framed the decision to leave as reluctant, and the result of “ungrounded and misleading claims.”
The Book Fair, known in France as Festival du Livres de Paris, is France’s largest literary event. Featuring poets, comedians, authors, dramatists, chefs, and composers, the festival has drawn hundreds of publishers and thousands of writers to the Grand Palais over the past 30 years. Last year’s event clocked in with 114,000 attendees.
This year’s fest is scheduled from April 17-April 19. And thanks to the gumption of the SLF, the fair is set to proceed as planned despite Amazon’s departure.
The festival organizers—i.e., the Paris Livres Événements, a subsidiary of France’s publishers’ association—said the decision will avert “serious disruption.” And, as The Guardian reported Friday, “safeguard the interests of the 450 exhibitors and estimated 120,000 visitors.”
Hooray for bookseller power, and pressuring the powers that me! Et bon voyage, lecteurs français.
