Stacey Abrams will publish Stacey’s Extraordinary Words, a children’s picture book illustrated by Kitt Thomas, on December 28th with HarperCollins Children’s Books imprint Balzer + Bray. Though Abrams has published three bestselling books for adults under her own name, as well as eight romance novels as Selena Montgomery, this is Abrams’s first children’s book.

Stacey’s Extraordinary Words, based on Abrams’s time participating in spelling bees in elementary school, deals with themes of perseverance and bravery in the face of unkindness (which we know Abrams has experience with!). “Some kids picked on me and others who were different. Over the years, I learned how to use my words to do good, even when I am most afraid,” said Abrams in a statement. “I loved competing in spelling bees as a young girl. With this book, I want to inspire children to speak up for themselves and for others—and to keep trying if they don’t succeed the first time around.”
