Continuing a wonderful holiday tradition, literary magazine The Common has launched its sixth annual author postcard auction. Until November 30th, readers will have an opportunity to bid online for personalized, handwritten postcards from 30 writers, including André Aciman, Valeria Luiselli, George Saunders, Viet Thanh Nguyen, and more.

The Common‘s editor-in-chief, Jennifer Acker, said the auction is “infinitely more personal than social media, and as a physical object, the postcard lasts as a keepsake.”

In previous years, authors have had a lot of fun with this. Ann Patchett once wrote a haiku for someone. Deborah Eisenberg’s card was a short story about the view from her window. Mira Jacob included her own unique drawings. Jennine Capó Crucet eventually became friends with the recipient of her postcard!

The proceeds from the auction will support the payment and mentoring of emerging authors affiliated with The Common, as well as provide support for various community programs.
