Here’s how you can get a personalized, handwritten postcard from your favorite author.
The holiday season is quickly approaching (!), and I’m sure you’ve been thinking about what to buy your friends and loved ones. Well, how about a personalized postcard from a favorite author?
The Common just kicked off its eighth annual author postcard auction, which features Joy Williams, Maggie Shipstead, Alexander Chee, Anthony Doerr, David Sedaris, George Saunders, and Amor Towles. In addition to these literary titans, celebrities and multi-hyphen entertainers are also participating, such as Phoebe Robinson, Jenny Slate, and The Hold Steady frontman Craig Finn. This year also includes first-time contributors Kirstin Valdez Quade, Taylor Jenkins Reid, Aleksandar Hemon, and Lily King.
“Readers are hungry for connection with the writers they love—we’ve all been apart from each other for so long. This year’s auction provides a much-needed injection of real-life communion, which so many of us crave when we’ve fallen in love with an author or a book. We’re so grateful to all the authors who are donating their time and postcard-writing skills!” editor-in-chief Jennifer Acker said.
The winning bids are tax-deductible donations, and all proceeds will go to The Common Foundation, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to publishing and promoting art and literature from global, diverse voices. Want to support The Common but don’t want to place a bid? You can show your support and donate here.
Online bidding is open until noon on December 1st. Check out a few cards from previous years below.
