Laure Murat, a historian, is a professor in the Department of French and Francophone Studies at UCLA and the director of its Center for European and Russian Studies. Her latest book in English is The Man Who Thought He Was Napoleon: Towards a Political History of Madness (University of Chicago Press, 2014), and her latest book in French, from which this piece was adapted, is Relire: Enquête sur une passion littéraire (Flammarion, 2015).
