Al Murray Reads from The Last 100 Years (Give or Take) and All That
From the We Have Ways of Making You Talk Podcast
We Have Ways of Making You Talk is a weekly show exploring the war in close up, hosted by comedian Al Murray and historian James Holland as they discuss all matters Second World War.
An awful lot has happened in the last 100 years or so. In fact, when you look at how much went on in the 20th century, it’s amazing it didn’t take longer than that. In this extract from his new book, The Last 100 Years (Give or Take) and All That, Al Murray takes a close look at the Battle of Britain.
From the episode:
Al Murray: I don’t know how many of you are familiar with Sellar and Yeatman’s epic classic comedy history book 1066 and All That. Well, I certainly am. And when I was asked to write this book, I said, yeah, sure, I’d love to. But what I’ve made sure I haven’t done is tried to pastiche their style or do a book their way, because basically that would be impossible. And also, I’m slightly bigheaded enough to think, well, I’ll put it through my own comedy grinder, my humorous outlook.
We’ve got a little extract for you today. For We Have Ways listeners, the middle section of the book, although it’s got some gags in it, may sound slightly familiar. Maybe some of the things that James Holland and I have spoken about along the way.
