For as long as I can remember, a bestseller in the world of books has only referred to the Times’s list of top sellers, the reigning measuring stick of publishing success. But a new bestseller list put together by two independent books organizations is aiming to instead highlight titles that too often go overlooked by the mainstream.

The Independent Press Top 40 is a new list that celebrates “the distinctive voices that thrive in the indie publishing ecosystem.” This new initiative will publish every Thursday with a list of the top 40 fiction and the top 40 nonfiction titles published by indie presses and sold in indie bookshops, based on nationwide, weighted sales data from independent bookstores. This snapshot of the independent ecosystem is the product of a collaboration by the American Booksellers Association and the Independent Publishers Caucus, two organizations dedicated to supporting and advocating for independent bookstores and presses, respectively.

“This indie-to-indie collaboration is a celebration of the creativity, diversity, and entrepreneurial spirit that defines both independent publishing and independent bookselling,” said Allison Hill, the CEO at ABA, in a statement.

This new weekly Top 40 aims to celebrate books that often fall through the mainstream cracks, says Dan Simon, co-founder of the IPC and Publisher at Seven Stories Press: “It’s thrilling to see a list that reflects the incredible variety of titles you simply won’t find on any other bestseller list.”

The first lists are live on the Top 40 page, with Heart the Lover by Lily King at the top of the fiction charts and The Gales of November by John U. Bacon at number one in non-fiction.
