A new prize from three publishers will champion poetry in translation.
Fitzcarraldo Editions, Giramondo Publishing, and New Directions are teaming up to launch The Poetry in Translation Prize, a new biennial award for a poetry collection translated into English.
The inaugural round of submissions opens on July 15th, and any living poet who works in a language other than English is eligible to submit. The winning poet and translator will split a $5,000 advance before a 2027 publication in North America by New Directions, in the UK and Ireland by Fitzcarraldo, and in Australia and New Zealand by Giramondo.
This isn’t the first time these three publishers have teamed up for an award. Since 2020, they’ve run the Novel Prize, a biennial award for a book-length work of literary fiction in English. And Fitzcarraldo gives out an annual Essay Prize for unpublished authors.
These previous prizes were a guide for the new Poetry in Translation Prize, said Fitzcarraldo poetry editor Rachael Allen: “Using the model of the already established Novel and Essay prizes, we wanted to open our doors to new poetry in translation to give space and gain exposure to poetries we may not be aware of.”
Nick Tapper, associate publisher at Giramondo, said the new Poetry in Translation prize “foregrounds the essential role of translation in our literature” and “will bring new readers to poets whose work deserves wide and sustained attention.”
Keep an eye out for Prize’s first shortlist late this year, with a winner to be announced in January 2026!
