Here’s what’s making us happy this week.
It’s been a week of welcome change, in terms of temps and altitudes. We at Lit Hub are seeing familiar climes from fresh angles.
Jonny Diamond is grateful for last week’s voyage to AWP, that apex stateside literary conference. In Baltimore, our editor produced a reading featuring writers from our Letters from Minnesota series. He was honored to follow the state’s incredible example live, on a roster celebrating the power of solidarity.
The highlight of this interstate literary exchange? “Being called an ‘honorary Minnesotan’ from the stage,” says Jonny. “A sobriquet I am tempted to turn into a t-shirt.”
Molly Odintz is also gone a’ traveling this week. Back in time, in her case—to see Gogol Bordello in San Antonio. The joyful aughts art rockers are set to play on a drained stretch of the San Antonio riverwalk this very evening.
Dancing with an old fave will be almost as exciting as getting a glimpse of the primordial riverbed, which is usually covered with sludge.
I, Brittany Allen, have a televisual tie-in. My household is rewatching The Sopranos to welcome spring. (As ya do…) And this time around, I’m all about the art direction. An auspiciously timed exhibit at the Museum of the Moving Image in Queens celebrating the set design that made the show is therefore singing my song.
Containing drawings and ground plans of “Dr. Melfi’s office, the Soprano home, the Bada Bing strip club, and Satriale’s Pork Store,” this new exhibit runs through the end of May. This fan is excited to peek behind the curtain. For a show so often celebrated for its writing and character development, it’ll be nice to tip a hat to the artists who made the Dirty Jerze.
Wishing you all a weekend of sweet sobriquets, unlikely party venues, and careful character development. Let the good weather hold and the moods follow suit.
