WATCH: Kyung-sook Shin in Conversation with Her Translator Anton Hur
Hosted by Greenlight Bookstore
Greenlight is honored to welcome to the virtual stage—calling in live from Seoul, Korea—celebrated Korean author Kyung-sook Shin and acclaimed translator Anton Hur, celebrating their joint achievement in the English translation of Violets, newly published by Feminist Press.
San is 22 and alone when she happens upon a job at a flower shop in Seoul’s bustling city center. Haunted by childhood rejection, she stumbles through life—painfully vulnerable, stifled, and unsure. Barely registering to others as she desperately searches for both autonomy and attachment in the unforgiving reality of contemporary Korean society, she stumbles upon a curious cast of characters over the course of this haunting, atmospheric tale that explores misogyny, erasure, and repressed desire in the ruthless milieu of 1990s South Korea.
