The freelance writing life? Making tiny gourmet meals for a chipmunk, apparently.

Aside from the fear and anxiety and loneliness of the pandemic many people have picked up diversionary non-digital habits over the last eight months: baking, gardening, woodworking, and, of course, constructing elaborate miniature gourmet meals for the local chipmunk.

Since April freelance food writer Angela Hansberger has been setting out meals for a particular neighborhood chipmunk who comes around each day to sit at a miniature picnic table. In a sentence that would make Michel Gondry blush, Hansberger “…found this little goblet and I had it up there, we made a bar so I had it up against the bar. He took a flag one day. I had a pendant flag and he carried it off with his little hands into his hole.”

The chipmunk—who has an Instagram account under the name “Thelonius Munk”—has been enjoying a variety of meals, from ramen to pizza to sushi. And no, Hansberger isn’t actually making miniature versions of these foods, but instead is substituting nuts, vegetables, and fruit. Apparently Thelonius is pretty fussy though, so she “has to be careful which veggies she puts in.”

Here are more pictures of Thelonius enjoying his lunch. (Maybe, just maybe, this will distract from today’s coup and Covid news.)
