Support authors and enjoy great photography with Beowulf Sheehan’s An Author a Day project.
In this time of canceled events, closed bookstores, and ambient anxiety, Beowulf Sheehan, noted literary photographer and the eye behind many of your favorite portraits of writers, has started a new project to highlight authors and their work. Sheehan writes:
With the advent of the coronavirus and the knowledge that, despite warnings, times of dread are very much upon us—and it’s time to go to work. For many artists of letters, however, there is no work to be found. Now is the time to support artists and each other. You can help with An Author a Day. Beginning March 23, 2020 with two images of Toni Morrison until the end of the virus, by 10:00AM EDT each day I’ll post a photograph of an author on Instagram and on this page with—as long as bookstores, photo labs, and delivery services are open—links to purchase that author’s work(s) and to purchase photographic prints. If you are in the USA, buying books from Bookshop.org will support independent bookstores across the country. Partial proceeds from print sales will support either writers directly or support the Authors League Fund. Since 1917, the Fund has helped professional authors, journalists, poets, and dramatists who find themselves in financial need because of medical or health-related problems, temporary loss of income, or other misfortune.
Not every writer whose photograph will be published here will be a household name, but your support of writers by purchasing their works and/or prints of their portraits will help those in need keep their homes and more. If you wish to make a donation directly to the Authors League Fund, you can do so here. (If you are an author in need and I have photographed you, please contact me. Thank you.)
Yet another great way to support authors and artists.
