A series of online events will raise money for Bay Area bookstores that have been impacted by the coronavirus pandemic—and it begins tonight.

The effort, called We Love Bookstores, kicks off with a reading and discussion from Michael Chabon and Ayelet Waldman, with upcoming events featuring Carl Zimmer, Katherine Applegate, and Alexander Chee, among others. Attendees can register on Eventbrite and the proceeds will benefit Pegasus Books, which has locations in Berkeley and Oakland.

The events, which will be livestreamed over Zoom, are pay-what-you-can. “We’d love it if you could kick in a few bucks if you’re able, but we want to make these events available to everyone who loves books and bookstores,” author and organizer Charlie Jane Anders tweeted.
