Beloved Bennington poet Mary Ruefle (Madness, Rack, and Honey; My Private Property; Dunce) has been named Vermont’s poet laureate! She was selected by a panel of judges and will serve as the state’s ambassador for the arts.

The honor is bestowed every four years. Previous Vermont poet laureates include Grace Paley, Louise Glück, and Robert Frost. At the ceremony earlier this week, Ruefle accepted the position, saying “I am honored to join the ranks of those who served before me—two of those are in this room—and humbled and scared. But I am used to that. That is how I feel in the face of poetry.”
