Julia Hannafin on Thematic Parallels
In Conversation with Lindsay Hunter on I'm a Writer But
Welcome to I’m a Writer But, where writers discuss their work, their lives, their other work, the stuff that takes up any free time they have, all the stuff they’re not able to get to, and the ways in which any of us get anything done. Plus: book recommendations, bad jokes, okay jokes, despair, joy, and anything else going on that week. Hosted by Lindsay Hunter.

Today, Julia Hannafin discusses their debut novel, Cascade, as well as the research they did into the Farallon Islands, writing from life, bird shit, grief, working with Great Place Books, the difference between writing for TV and writing novels, and more!
From the episode:
Julia Hannafin: I knew that I wanted there to be some sort of parallel between the devolving relationships on the island, and the disintegrating research on the island. Continuing to follow the thematic parallels–having the connection between this confusion around parenting, wanting someone to have parented you in a different way, understanding that you’re reliving something–I think the parallels really helped me.
