Joy Harjo has been named the 23rd U.S. Poet Laureate, becoming the first Native American, and the first Oklahoman, to hold the position. Harjo is a member of the Muscogee Creek Nation, and lives in Tulsa. She is the author of eight books of poetry as well as one memoir, one children’s book, and one young-adult book.

To quote poet D.A. Powell, “Joy Harjo serving as the new US Poet Laureate might be the first thing to happen in Washington D.C. this year that actually makes sense.”
