Exciting news: Deadline reported this morning that the screen rights to Freshwater and The Death of Vivek Oji author Akwaeke Emezi’s forthcoming romance novel You Made A Fool of Death with Your Beauty have been purchased by Amazon Studios in a highly competitive deal. Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society will develop the project, and Emezi will serve as executive producer.

You Made A Fool of Death with Your Beauty, titled after a Florence and the Machine song, follows a “young artist struggling to overcome the loss of an old love while inviting a new one in”—the protagonist is a 29-year-old Nigerian aspiring artist in Brooklyn who loses her husband in a tragic accident and is torn between grief and moving on when she meets a handsome young man at a party and starts to move up in the art world.

Other than that, we’ll have to wait for more information, as the still-unpublished novel will be released by Simon & Schuster’s Atria imprint in 2022. But impatient Emezi fans are in luck: Emezi’s memoir Dear Senthuran: A Black Spirit Memoir will be published by Riverhead on June 8. When it comes to Emezi projects, there’s a lot to look forward to.
